Purpose: To demonstrate the feasibility of using tiny houses to address the lack of affordable housing in Manhattan, KS and surrounding areas.
Background: Cost of housing in Manhattan, KS is the highest in the state of Kansas. There are currently few effective strategies that address this problem (see Big Trouble in the Little Apple – Affordable Housing for more info). Further, housing is intricately tied to human health both directly (e.g., access to housing is a basic human need; poor or expensive housing impacts stress and mental health) and indirectly (e.g., the type and quality of materials impact sustainability and environmental health). Tiny houses represent a unique opportunity to address both of these problems.
- To build and live in a tiny house using locally sourced and sustainable materials
- To document the process and raise awareness of the lack of affordable housing and the potential for tiny houses to address this problem
- To facilitate and inspire further efforts to address affordable housing
